Frankfurt – Where Tradition Meets Innovation!

30. April 2024

Whether by air, rail, inland waterways, or road – the Frankfurt Rhine/Main metropolitan region is one of the most important transportation hubs in both the German and European transport networks, making it a key logistics gateway.

It is the most populous city in the state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany. Millions of tourists visit Frankfurt each year, marveling at the city’s impressive skyline, which includes some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe.

In numbers: Frankfurt is home to around 800,000 people, while the greater Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region has nearly 6 million inhabitants. Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany and the fourth largest in Europe. Each year, it handles around 50 million passengers and processes more than 2 million tons of cargo on average. This makes Frankfurt Airport the busiest in Europe in terms of cargo volume and ranks it among the largest cargo airports in the world.

On one hand, the Hessian city on the Main River is internationally known as a financial center – it hosts the European Central Bank, the German Bundesbank, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. On the other hand, it is also one of the largest hubs for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in Europe and still offers promising opportunities for inland shipping. Frankfurt is connected to the Danube and southeastern Central Europe via the Main-Danube Canal. The Main River is a federal waterway and navigable for large push convoys up to 185 meters in length.

Equally important for the logistics industry is the Frankfurt motorway interchange, which connects the A3 (West/East) and A5 (North/South) motorways. It is the busiest motorway interchange in Germany.
